Google Zeitgeist Young Minds from Africa - 2012

Earlier this year, we invited creative young minds to apply to be part Zeitgeist Young Minds, an opportunity for young people to showcase how they are making a positive impact in our world.  This year’s winners have now been named and we are very excited to see that of the 10 inspiring young people selected from around the world 5 are 
from Africa.


The young Africans selected were:

  • Ada Umeofia, 19 from Nigeria WeBuilt: Africa is a design-centered social enterprise that redesigns and constructs market stalls for poverty-stricken Africans by recycling found building materials in slums. View the video:
  • Joel Mwale, 19 from Kenya Skydrop Enterprise Inc has brought safe drinking water to a community of 5,000 and has become a profitable enterprise from selling bottled water across Kenya and Uganda. View the video:

  • Jordan Ridge, 23 from South Africa Made by Mosaic is a job creation project for women in South Africa addressing the challenges of economic development in the townships. View the video:
  • Sibusiso Tshabalala, 20 from South Africa Developed reading clubs and a library renovation programme in South Africa to encourage critical thinking and thoughtful debate within local high schools. View the video:

  • Simeon Oriko, 23 from Kenya The Kuyu Project trains school children on how to use social media for social change and promotes digital literacy. View the video:

We are inspired by these young Africans and look forward to following their progress!

Google Zeitgeist Young Minds 2012: l'Afrique à l'honneur

Au début de l'année, nous avons invité les jeunes créatifs à s'inscrire pour participer aux  Zeitgeist Young Minds, une opportunité pour les jeunes de montrer leur contribution au monde qui nous entoure. Les lauréats de cette année sont désormais désignés, et nous sommes très heureux de constater que sur les dix sélectionnés dans le monde entier, cinq viennent d'Afrique.

  • Ada Umeofia, 19 ans, de WeBuilt: Africa (Nigeria), une entreprise sociale axée sur le design qui redessine et construit des stands de marché pour les Africains les plus pauvres, en recyclant des matériaux de construction récupérés dans des bidonvilles. Voir la vidéo :
  • Joel Mwale, 19 ans, de Skydrop Enterprise Inc (Kenya), qui a apporté l'eau potable à une communauté de 5000 personnes et est devenue une entreprise rentable grâce à la vente de bouteilles d'eau au Kenya et en Ouganda. Voir la vidéo :
  • Jordan Ridge, 23 ans, de Made by Mosaic (Afrique du Sud), un projet de création d'emploi pour les femmes d'Afrique du Sud en faveur du développement économique dans les townships. Voir la vidéo :
  • Sibusiso Tshabalala, 20 ans, (Afrique du Sud), qui a mis sur pied des clubs de lecture et un programme de rénovation de bibliothèques en Afrique du Sud, dans le but d'encourager la pensée critique et les débats argumentés au sein des établissements secondaires. Voir la vidéo :
  • Simeon Oriko, 23 ans, (Kenya), pour le The Kuyu Project qui forme les élèves à l'utilisation des médias sociaux pour contribuer au changement social, et les aide à maîtriser de l'univers numérique. Voir la vidéo:

Enthousiasmés par ces jeunes Africains, nous ne manquerons pas de suivre attentivement leur progrès !
