G | South Africa 2.0

En Français

G | South Africa returned this week for the second year running with 800 developers, business owners, marketers and tech entrepreneurs joining us for a packed two-day programme.

Last year we held our first G | South Africa in Cape Town and this year, for version 2.0, we took it to Jo’burg and the atmospheric Turbine Hall in Newtown. The old Jeppe Street power station was the perfect venue for our multi-track conference where attendees could choose between a range of topics and hands-on workshops, depending on their interest.

More than 20 Googlers from across the globe presented on their areas of expertise. Some highlights included the keynote by Nelson Mattos, VP of Engineering for EMEA; a live demo of Google+ features by Essam El-Dardiry (Technical Program Manager, Middle East and North Africa) as well as a deeper look at the G+ API.

We also had a chance to showcase some of South Africa’s biggest YouTube stars, including Cobus Potgieter (aka the incredible drummer, DeedleBag on YouTube), who’s become such a success that he had to join us via live hangout from Los Angeles!. In addition, we received a surprise message from the United States from Die Antwoord, thanking YouTube in their own unique style. We’re excited about the innovation coming from our YouTube partners and on Day Two, publishers had the opportunity to attend an in-depth workshop to learn how to create and monetize great content.

Speaking of YouTube, we also formally launched our new user interface in isiZulu and Afrikaans and we’re looking forward to seeing how many South Africans choose to use YouTube in their home language.

On the non-technical side, one of my absolute favourite G-Day features was something far removed from the technical world - Bongani Ngwenya’s Google-themed makarapas!

There are many more pics and thoughts under #gsouthafrica on Google+. Hope to see you all next year!!
