Google Maps now available on 40+ new country domains, including 6 in Africa

Here at Google our goal is to make all the world’s information accessible and useful. Providing relevant local information to users in each country has been at the heart of what motivates the Google Maps team.

Back in 2005 we started with one domain, .com, and have since expanded to add regions from across the world. Today we are happy to announce that we are adding more than 40 new domains on Google Maps, including six African countries: Somalia, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Lesotho, Mali and Niger.

Our efforts to start putting Africa on the map kicked off in 2009 when we launched Google Maps for Kenya, followed by the addition of another 31 domains in early 2010. We have also enabled users in 45 African countries to build and edit maps in Map Maker - a product that enables people to add to and update the map for their local area.

With the new local domains on Google Maps, users can now add and find local businesses and services. Businesses can create a free listing on Google Places and install the Maps API on their websites to help customers find their location. We also offer Google Maps for mobile on web enabled handsets, which is of particular interest for Africa where there is a huge percentage of people using mobile to access the Internet.

So whether you are in Sri Lanka, Venezuela or Cameroon, you’ll have a unique local domain to help find directions, local information and new favorite places.

The following highlighted countries show where we’ve added new domains:

We hope you enjoy using Google Maps wherever you might be!
