On Wednesday, September 21st 2011, Google held its first “Gone Google” Awareness Day in Nigeria at the University of Benin (Uniben) in Benin City, Edo State. Over 300 students and staff attended. During the event, the Uniben campus community learned more about Google products such as Google Apps, Search and Chrome. There was also a fun packed trivia quiz where winners won prizes like Android Ideos phones. By going Google, over 40,000 Uniben students and staff now have access to Google Apps for Education, a free suite of hosted email and collaboration applications exclusively for schools and universities.

The Awareness Day was part of a series of Africa-wide university outreach efforts by the Google Apps Supporting Programs, a Google initiative aimed at increasing Internet usage in African universities through the provision of Internet bandwidth, infrastructure grants, technical consulting and Google Apps for Education deployment support and training. The University of Benin formally launched its partnership with Google on Friday, September 23rd.

So far, Google Apps for Education has been deployed in over 20 universities across Sub-Saharan Africa to hundreds of thousands of students and university faculty. Universities interested in “going Google” should visit the initiative’s site. We look forward to partnering with more universities across Sub-Saharan Africa!
