United Nations use Google+ Hangouts to Push Peace during the Kenyan Elections

We recently launched the Google Elections Hub to provide easily accessible voter information. Today, we are collaborating with the United Nations System in Kenya and other partners to launch a national interactive campaign that will rally Kenyans to peacefully participate in the upcoming general elections on March 4, 2013.

The Sports 4 Peaceful Elections campaign brings together the United Nations in Kenya, Google Kenya, IEBC (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission), NCIC (National Cohesion and Integration Commission), Kenya Premier League, Kenya Football Federation, Athletics Kenya and the Kenya Rugby Union under the rallying call ‘Shabikia Amani na Kura Yako’ (Support Peace with Your Vote).

Sports personalities from several disciplines, including football, rugby and athletics, will take part in this campaign using Google+ as the main social media platform. In these interactive Hangouts, the sports stars shall engage and urge Kenyans to be “fans of peace” in the lead up and during the elections, in 41 days time.
The unprecedented post elections violence witnessed in 2007/8 has led to many Kenyans taking part in peace-related campaigns. With this campaign, we hope to complement these existing initiatives. Additionally, the vast digital space provides an opportunity for greater inclusivity, interactivity and reach to a diverse youthful population.
In Kenya, social media has been prone to instances of hate and dangerous speech. According to the UMATI online monitoring report for October 2012, there were 774 reported incidences of dangerous speech. The Sports 4 Peaceful Elections campaign will appeal for responsible commentary on social media as Kenyans use online tools during the elections period.
The campaign and Google+ Hangouts series will run for a period of 8 weeks. Feel strongly about peace in your local community? Then get involved and join the first of 9 Hangouts here.
