Androiding in Nairobi

When the Google G-Kenya team arrived at Strathmore University’s Business School late on Sunday night, they discovered sagging tents and steel littering the courtyard, relics of an earlier conference. Team chief Bridgette Sexton, ably assisted by local wedding planners (yes, she uses wedding planners!) worked through the evening. By Monday morning, all the former remants had been removed and the campus was sparkling in bright Google blue, red and yellow, ready to receive more than 1200 developers, entrepreneurs and marketers ...

... and a few dozen Googlers from around the world.

Kenya is home to arguably Africa’s largest tech community, and Google’s largest Africa office. The Google Nairobi office did crucial work to launch Google Maps across the African continent as well as on Google Search and Translate in African languages.

Mobile is another African priority, and Google is working hard to provide mobile solutions for Kenyans. Excitement and even cheering filled the auditorium as Nelson Mattos, Engineering Vice President, announced the Kenyan launch of Android Market – an open distribution channel for mobile applications that allows developers to distribute their applications to users worldwide. From now on, Kenyan developers will be able to develop and deploy their apps just like an American, Japanese, French or any other developer.

Google's Joseph Mucheru and Nelson Mattos meet the press

The Android launch came on the same days as a local operator announced plans to sell an inexpensive Android powered phone in Africa. Let’s be clear – the timing was an accident and not coordinated with us. The Android mobile software operating system is free and open to all operators. Kenyan market leader Safaricom already offers a sophisticated, and pricey, Android model.

G-Kenya is the latest in a series of interactive forums and tech days that Google has been holding across Africa this year to promote innovation and business. For the full schedule, visit the G-Kenya website. Just last week, we rocked on the shores of Lake Victoria in Kampala, Uganda. Once we pack up in Nairobi on Wednesday evening, we’ll start planning for the next one in November in Cape Town. Get ready wedding planners!
