New African countries live on Google Maps

En Français

The next time you visit Botswana, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Nigeria or most of the 50+ countries in Africa, you need not carry with you maps and guides and other travel aids. Google has now launched detailed maps for several countries in Africa - Maps that are searchable and contain rich information of geographical features, roads, landmarks and other attributes.

Five Cowries Creek in Lagos, Sports Stadium in Bangui, National Geological museum at Antananarivo, Kogyae National Reserve in Ghana, Marahoue National Park in Cote d'Ivoire are just some of the few features that you can now search for and spot on Google Maps. These new maps complement the already existing map coverage of Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Botswana, Senegal, Mauritius, Seychelles and Zimbabwe. The information is also available on Google Earth and Google Maps for Mobile (GMM).

The maps include substantial user generated content and were built using Map Maker currently open for editing in 45 African countries (and more than 160 countries world wide).
These maps are also a result of a concerted effort by Google as part of the Africa initiative. This launch has been possible through significant global collaboration between Google's Africa, India and US offices.

Coming at a time where there is limited digital geo content in these regions, we hope that this new launch will greatly increase opportunities for businesses, academic institutions, governments, non-governmental organisations and the end users across the continent.

Explore the maps, give feedback and improve the maps yourself via Google Map Maker!
