Lagos goes Google as G-Nigeria hits Naija.

I found it quite flattering when a student from the University of Ibadan, while commenting about his experience at G-Nigeria 2011, said: “Google definitely showed up here in a big way.” Indeed, in an emerging economy like Nigeria, which has relatively low Internet penetration, the just concluded G-Nigeria event provided yet another opportunity to underscore Google’s commitment to developing the Internet ecosystem, both in Nigeria and across the continent.

Led by the Google Nigeria team, with the support of over 30 Googlers who stormed the Civic Centre in Lagos from the London, Zurich, Mountain View, Tel Aviv, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa and Senegal offices, we wanted to make sure that participants went away empowered - with a deeper understanding of Google products and greater business insights and applications.

The venue was filled to capacity and it was great to see over 1,000 participants attending the developer and business days. They also had a chance in between sessions to have their photos taken at our photo booth! The participants ranged from young to seasoned developers, entrepreneurs, students, professors, and members of the press. Some of them flew into Lagos from as far as Abuja, Benin, Kano and Port-Harcourt. Googlers aimed to make the sessions both informative and interactive, as well as give ‘real-life’ examples of Nigerian entrepreneurs who are already using Google products in their businesses.

Alongside sessions on YouTube for Business, Search Advertising and Mobile, guest commentary was provided by entrepreneurs including Lagos-based Jason Njoku of Nollywood Love – one of YouTube’s top recent partners; Toyin Kolawole of True Branches – a successful online retail entrepreneur, and Saheed Adepoju of Encipher Group – co-creator of Nigeria's first locally-produced Android-powered tablet device. The G-Nigeria panels also attracted other business personalities, especially young and upcoming entrepreneurs like Gbenga Sesan of Paradigm Initiative Nigeria, Shola Akinlade and Mayowa Okegbenle of Klein Devort, Tarebi Jituboh of Sugar Weddings, Deji Adewunmi of Jobberman and Tayo Oviosu of Pagatech.

Like Google, Nigerians showed excitement about the vast array of opportunities that the Internet provides, and are eager to participate more fully in the global technological revolution. Google continues on the path to building local capacity to improve the web. Next stop? Cameroon! On June 15-16th, G-Cameroon lands in Douala. We look forward to share our passion with Cameroon and watch as West Africans take up the challenge of changing the face of the web for Africa and beyond.
