A Reflection from G-South Africa

Last week, over 1000 participants from all over South Africa joined Google in beautiful Cape Town for G-South Africa, our sixth G-event in Africa this year. It was two days where we shared our latest tech news and demonstrated how businesses can get the best from Google products. I was pleased to be part of the team of more than forty Googlers who went along to present, answer questions, and also learn about the challenges facing organisations in the region first hand from the attendees.

The questions came thick and fast from everyone - students, developers and business leaders - all keen to find out more about what we’re doing in South Africa. Googlers from around the globe swapped suggestions and ideas on products as wide ranging as Google Sites, Mobile advertising, and YouTube. I particularly enjoyed the panel sessions with entrepreneurs sharing their experiences and being very candid about some of the problems which many start-ups face.

Just last week Google announced voice search for South African English, Afrikaans and Zulu and many attendees were excited about having this feature available in their languages. It was intriguing to see first hand some Zulu speakers using it - getting their search results after a few words and clicks.

This was my first visit to South Africa and I’m very much hoping it won’t be my last. There are many opportunities and just as many complex issues to be tackled - from helping to improve the internet infrastructure to ensuring that it’s easy for everyone to use the web regardless of their level of literacy. It was great to see that so many people - inside and outside Google - are helping and I look forward to going back again soon to see how things change.

Une réflexion sur G-South Africa

La semaine dernière, plus de 1000 participants de toute l’Afrique du Sud ont rejoint Google dans la superbe ville du Cap pour le G-South Africa, notre sixième G-événement en Afrique cette année. Pendant deux jours, nous avons partagé les toutes dernières informations techniques et montré comment les entreprises peuvent tirer le meilleur parti des produits Google. J’ai été heureux de faire partie d’une équipe de plus de quarante Googlers, qui n’ont eu de cesse de présenter les produits, répondre aux questions et aussi s’informer, de la bouche même des participants, sur les défis que doivent relever les entreprises de la région.

Les questions se sont succédé à un rythme rapide, posées par tout un chacun - étudiants, développeurs et chefs d’entreprise – tous désireux d’en savoir plus sur ce que nous faisons en Afrique du Sud. Les Googlers du monde entier ont échangé des suggestions et des idées sur des produits aussi divers que les Google Sites, la publicité sur portable ou YouTube. J’ai particulièrement apprécié les sessions avec des entrepreneurs partageant leurs expériences, se montrant parfois très naïfs sur les problèmes rencontrés par de nombreuses start-up.

Il y a tout juste une semaine, Google annonçait le lancement de Voice search en anglais sud-africain, afrikaans et zoulou, et de nombreux participants étaient très heureux de disposer de cette fonction dans leur langue. J’étais curieux de voir en direct certains zoulouphones l’utiliser – et obtenir le résultat de leur recherche avec quelques mots et quelques clics.

C’était mon premier séjour en Afrique du Sud et j’espère vivement que ce ne sera pas le dernier. Il existe de nombreuses opportunités et autant de questions complexes à résoudre – de l’amélioration de l’infrastructure Internet à la facilité pour chacun d’utiliser Ia toile, quel que soit son niveau d’étude. Il est formidable de voir tant de gens – de et hors de Google – se mobiliser et je suis impatient de revenir bientôt pour voir comment les choses évoluent.
