Google Trikes Coming to South Africa

Posted on 13:00 by Unknown
En Français

As we announced on this blog back in September, the snazzy Toyota Street View cars have landed South Africa and have been busy going about their work, collecting images of the country's urban landscapes. Well, today we're absolutely thrilled to be able to give you a sneak peek of an even more unusual invention than the Street View car. And not only that, we're asking for your help in telling us where to go with it.

Drum roll please..........for the Street View Trike!

This trike is nothing short of a mechanical masterpiece - comprising three bicycle wheels, a mounted Street View camera and a specially decorated box containing our image-collecting gadgetry. It's pedal powered which means it also comes with a very athletic cyclist in customised Google kit. You can see the Trike in action in the clip below at one of the UK's best-known tourist destinations, Stonehenge.

We've heard from many South Africans that they'd like us to include imagery of certain landmarks and tourist spots off the beaten track and the trikes help us to do just that, helping our tricylists to collect imagery in places inaccessible by the Street View cars.

That's why we're also excited to reveal the opening of a poll for the South African public to vote for their favourite spots, such as historic landmarks, heritage sites, places of natural beauty or sports venues, which the Trike might visit. To help inspire you, we've teamed up with South African Tourism, with their extensive knowledge of South Africa's tourist treasures, to compile a list of 20 exciting locations around the country, on which the public can vote and choose the top three locations that the Trike will visit first.

Do you want to see one of the World Cup stadiums on Street View? Or perhaps the Apartheid Museum, Kruger National Park or the Valley of the Zulu Kings? It's up to you and easy to do. Starting today, South Africans can vote via an online form at www.google.co.za/trike or from your mobile phones at www.google.co.za/mobile/trike.

Voting will be open for a limited period and then we'll get started with taking the images shortly afterwards (fingers crossed for good weather). Once these images have been collected and processed we look forward to showing off South Africa's history, nature and culture to people both at home and around the world in a new way via Google Maps and Street View.
