Google South Africa's 67 Minutes

Posted on 03:40 by Unknown
En Français

This year, the campaign celebrating Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday encourages South Africans - and hopefully the rest of the world - to spend 67 minutes of their time performing duties or activities useful to the community. Why 67? Because it is the number of that years Nelson Mandela dedicated to serving humanity, justice, development and freedom in South Africa.

So with hot dogs, our best smiles, colouring books and crayons in hand, the Google South Africa team dedicated our "67 minutes" to the United Cerebral Palsy Association (UCPA)of South Africa, in Johannesburg. Google South Africa's new Country Manager, Stephen Newton, suggested that we choose the United Cerebral Palsy Association after hearing about their excellent work and occasional lack of resources.

We spent the morning visiting the UCPA home, getting to understand the needs and basic requirements of the 45 or so residents, who have been abandoned or otherwise need special care. The residents often need around-the-clock care; most have been orphaned from birth and have lived in the home all their lives. Although the association receives donations, it was evident that giving out our hugs and time to the residents was met with much enthusiasm. Needless to say, we gained SO MUCH from the experience!

Googlers set aside a morning to dish out free hugs.

It was important to take time out from our usual office activities to learn more about those who are less fortunate or physically able than we are, and raised a new sense perspective among everyone on the team.

We're hoping to make more time in our busy Googly schedules for community service, but have to thank Madiba for giving us this incentive!

The home itself relies on corporate sponsorship, being a private and non-profit institution. For anyone interested making a donation, log onto www.ucpa.za.org.
