New Maps for Senegal, Zimbabwe, Mauritius and Seychelles

Posted on 10:26 by Unknown
En Français

We are very excited to announce that we have 4 more African countries live on Google Maps: Mauritius, Seychelles, Senegal , Zimbabwe.

The maps include substantial user generated content - in many ways, maps by Africans, for Africans! They were built using Map Maker which is now open for 45 African countries (and more than 160 countries world wide). With Map Maker, any user can create or edit map data by drawing and labeling roads, or adding points of interest such as schools, buildings, local businesses, national parks, and trails and safaris. If you have strong local knowledge in any of these African countries, now is the time to make a difference. We now have Map Maker available in French, Arabic, and 25 other languages.

A quick glance at Africa on Map Maker will show you that there is a lot of content available for several countries already. If you can't wait for this data to go live to Google Maps, all Map Maker tiles are now accessible through the Google Maps API. For more details on this see this Google Lat Long blog post.

Having good maps and local data can spur investment, local commerce and planning. We are excited to see how the community is going to respond to these new maps and how quickly we will start seeing 'mashup sites' built around the Google Maps API.

We leave you with an image of the maps for Dakar, Senegal, before and after the launch.
